I was recently very inspired by an article I read in the well know publication YOGA Journal.
It was entitled ” Building boundaries from the inside out ” I was immediately hooked! Who doesn’t need and to build boundaries? It seems to me a large majority of us are beyond paper thin these days and those words offered a small, yet glittering amount of hope.
I am actually going to blog in 3 parts on this article – but I’d like to start with the concept that grabbed me the most. It was this small caption that asked the question, “Are you an empath?” I thought to myself….A what? Of course I have empathy. I am a good person, I care about people. Having empathy is the ability to understand and share feelings of another. But as I continued to read and even research the subject of being an empath, I realized as the article states, that being an empath left unchecked can be the very thing that compromises your health. Also of course, your overall well being……your ability to live life to the fullest.
What is an empath?
Being an empath is when you are affected by other people’s energies, and have an innate ability to intuitively feel and perceive others. Your life is unconsciously influenced by others’ desires, wishes, thoughts, and moods. Being an empath is much more than being highly sensitive and it’s not just limited to emotions. Empaths can perceive physical sensitivities and spiritual urges, as well as just knowing the motivations and intentions of other people.
Empaths have a tendency to openly feel what is outside of them more so than what is inside of them. This can cause empaths to ignore their own needs. In general an empath is non-violent, non-aggressive and leans more towards being the peacemaker. Any area filled with disharmony creates an uncomfortable feeling in an empath. If they find themselves in the middle of a confrontation, they will endeavor to settle the situation as quickly as possible, if not avoid it all together. If any harsh words are expressed in defending themselves, they will likely resent their lack of self-control, and have a preference to peacefully resolve the problem quickly.
So as you can see, left unrecognized, left unnoticed, an empath can suffer from many health related problems. Chronic fatigue, stress, a depleted nervous system, anxiety and many other things. Clarity and understanding of what the signs are of being an empath can lead you down the right path toward conserving your energy, protecting yourself, and making healthier choices for your well being ! 🙂
Empath’s are unique personality types, their sensory levels are always on high alert, they are incredibly intuitive and their awareness and sensitivity to the energy levels that vibrate around them are extremely high.
